Do I Really Need to Prep My Pipes for Winter?

Updated: Feb 17, 2022

Cold temperatures are fast approaching. It may have you starting to think about what outdoor projects need to be checked off before the freeze sets in. Pipes are typically one of the items on the to-do list that you may have some questions about. Today we are discussing if pipes really need some TLC during the winter months.

Dangers of Freezing Temperatures

  • When temperatures in an area dip below freezing, it puts a lot of strain on pipes. Without proper maintenance and preparation, pipes can become frozen meaning more risk for a crack or rupture.

  • Water damage from frozen and broken pipes accounts for the biggest source of home damage in the winter months according to insurance companies.

  • An average water damage claim costs $7,479.

Water Consumption & System Strain

  • Winter temperatures typically keep us inside our homes and that means greater water consumption. This extra use puts greater strain on pipes, drains, and water heaters.

  • Hot water heaters also go through a lot of strain in cold weather. Heaters require more energy and have longer recovery times due to chilled water lines. Water temperature can tend to lag due to cold plumbing.

Leaks Lead to Mold Problems

  • Leaks in pipes can mean big problems in the winter. If not taken care of quickly, mold growth can begin in as little as 24-48 hours. The risk of water damage is high in the wintertime when temperatures dip below freezing. If you suspect a leak or problem with your pipes, fix the damage immediately to avoid the risks of water damage.

Giving your pipes a bit of extra attention this winter may be a good idea. Cold temperatures can mean big problems like burst pipes, and water damage is never a pleasant surprise.
